learning
Learning is just remembering, the trick being to remember the right stuff.
We can all remember where we were when so-and-so got married/shot/divorced, but how do we get to remember another language?
After teaching Welsh to adults for a number of years I saw that music had a role in the class.
I started playing Mozart quietly when the class were working on conversation work in Welsh. Quiet enough not to be intrusive, but when the music stopped everyone noticed and commented. They liked it too.
Cadw Swn, my Welsh course for adults, grew out of these experiments, research into Georgi Lozanov’s work, and my storytelling skills. It uses stories, music and works with the mind rather than against it. It’s the best way to learn Welsh, I still think that.
It was natural that when I was ask to tutor a friend’s son in 2009 I should return to music and remembering. Cwm Gwrachod is a series of audio recordings and stories to help younger people acquire and improve their Welsh. The first part is out now, with audio downloads, online games and a book of stories and exercises.
